Agricultural commodity markets have been evolving for some time. For several reasons, the landscape of global agriculture is shifting and with it the centers of power. Those shifts have tended to be away from North America and the US, south to Brazil, and east to the Black Sea and Europe.
While the US exerted enormous influence over most ag commodity markets due to the large market share of production and world trade, that market share has been shrinking.
The balance of power is shifting to places like Brazil for corn and soybeans, Southeast Asia for vegetable oils and the Black Sea region for wheat. Many of these countries and regions exert new risks on the markets in the areas of government policies, currencies, logistics, and weather.
